What Makes an Organizing Project a Success?

I understand that thinking about hiring a professional organizer can stir up some fear. After all, they will be in your private space where you are used to having complete control and privacy. You may worry about judgment, the decisions that will be made, and how your possessions will be handled. So, how do you let go of that fear and make sure that your much-needed project will be a success? Well, I've got some tips that should:

  • Help you find a team that's the right fit

  • Make sure you hit your objectives

  • Keep you in charge of important decisions

  • And set your project on a solid path to success

3 Keys to a Successful Organizing Project

Our team recently completed an exceptionally successful project, and it got me thinking about what makes a project successful for everyone involved...and how our approach supports that outcome. Here are three things that should help you find the right organizer and get the results you're looking for!

  1. Clear Objectives: For any team to be efficient and effective, they have to know what the objective is, right? So, before anything, you and your organizer need to agree on the mission.

At the beginning of every project, we define with the client what success would look like. This allows us to approach our work with clear goals. With that settled, we can direct our efforts appropriately, but with the flexibility to find the best way to get there. Our team can find creative solutions and unique systems that fit the needs of each client, knowing that we're headed in the right direction every step of the way.

  2. Trust: Let's face it, whether it's your garage, your office, or your underwear drawer, your organizer is going to be in your business. And there has to be a relationship of trust between you if any work is going to get done. So, how do you get there? Well, first, you should take the time to talk through all the aspects of your project. That way, you'll know what to expect and understand what your role will be in the process. Don't be shy about asking questions. It's your home and your stuff, after all. You should discuss your comfort level with your organizer making intuitive decisions versus asking for your direction. You should feel like you're on the same page. If your organizer is also asking a lot of good questions, that is a good sign they are working with your best interests in mind, not their own agenda. Trust makes a project more successful because you, as the client, can be at ease, taking as much of the work as possible off your shoulders. Don't settle for someone based on reputation or price alone. Make sure your organizer is someone you are comfortable with, even if that's not us. The right client-to-organizer match is what's most important. The project's level of success will depend on it.

  3. Communication: Even with clear objectives and trust in place, there are typically still many questions and decisions throughout an organizing project. Clear communication is vital. So, be sure you discuss the method and frequency of communication before your project gets underway. Make a plan and set the expectations from the get-go.

When you work with our team, we will most likely talk in person, but we understand it's not possible in all situations. If you're trying to manage a project from out of town (or even out of the country), for instance, we'll find another way to keep you as involved as you'd like to be. We've had many projects where we've communicated via video calls, texts, email, and shared photos. We keep you aware of the project's progress and respect your authority as the decision-maker, using whichever method of communication works best for you.

Ever Thought About Virtual Organizing?

Having a professional step in to declutter and organize isn't for everyone. If you don't think you're ready to take that step, there is still another option to help you achieve your organizing goals. We have found that sometimes people just need a little guidance and support while they do the hands-on work themselves. If that's you, Virtual Organizing may be for you!
